This week's 3 must-see music videos, starring Sleigh Bells, A Place To Bury Strangers, Sigur Rós

Sigur
In the last week, three of my favourite bands all released rather interesting music videos. I'll let the visuals do the talking. Enjoy below:

[Video] Grimes - "Nightmusic"

Nightmusic
I'm seriously digging the direction in which Miss Claire Boucher is taking her Grimes visual aesthetic. That is, a somewhat dark and dirty place. She follows up her video-of-the-year contender Oblivion with this woodlands-set, gothic-tinged clip for Nightmusic. Grimes is the new black.

[Video] Hot Chip - "Night & Day"

Lara
Synthpop maestros Hot Chip show us how to announce your new record with a big fucking splash: get supermodel and current it-girl Lara Stone, legendary actor Terence Stamp and some dude named Reggie Watts to star in a batshit crazy, sci-fi-fantasy promo video for your lead single. Shazam.

[Video] Desmond & The Tutus - "Tattoo"

Tattoo
Desmond & The Tutus are by far the most enthralling live band in the magical kingdom of South Africa, and if you have yet to witness one of their spellbinding shows in the flesh, I feel nothing but sorrow for you Sir/Madame. Tattoo is their latest single and video, taken from their latest record, the rascally named Mnusic.

Watch Mick Jagger perform with Arcade Fire, Foo Fighters, Jeff Beck on the season finale of SNL

Mick-jagger-snl
In my books, Saturday Night Live is usually a hit or miss affair, but you still end up watching every episode in the hope that this week, we'll get some real SNL magic. Well, this week, we did. The eternally cool Mick Jagger had the tough job of both hosting and performing, but he pulled it off style (who new Mick could be that funny?!), and he brought a few famous friends along for the ride. I urge you to hunt down a copy of the full episode by any means necessary, but in the meantime, here are a few of its musical highlights:

Listen to "As I Am", a new song by The xx

The_xx
Late last year, The xx treated us to the beautiful demo Open Eyes, a promising taste of things to come as the band started working on new songs for their much anticipated sophomore album. Now, over the last couple of weeks, a few more new songs have been leaked online, albeit in bootleg format. As I Am is the latest to surface, and while the audio quality may not be the best, it should help to whet the appetite of all you ardent xx fans out there.

Watch Explosions In The Sky's gorgeous video for “Postcard From 1952″

Explosions
Texan post-rockers Explosions In The Sky peddle in the kind of music that can easily be described as epic and cinematic, and God knows if I ever have the opportunity to direct a movie, I can think of no other band/musician I'd want to produce the accompanying score. Now, with the group's third official music video, they finally deliver a visual piece that truly delivers on their sound's emotive promise.

Grand. Beautiful. Affecting.

13 Songs for the Month of May 2012

13-songs-may-2012
The starting point for the May mix was it's opening track, The Golden
Filter
's epic, made-for-headphones interpretation of New Order's Age
of Consent
. It narrowly missed the cut last month due the fact that
Destroyer's version of Leave Me Alone (another New Order classic
courtesy of this Mojo issue) was simply a better fit for that mix.

Once the first track had been finalized, the rest of the mix
started to grow quite organically. One or two "hot new artists" could
easily have made it on there too, but I felt I needed to further
highlight the talents of a couple of amazing artists featured on
recent mixes: debut album of the year contender Father John Misty and
the seriously underexposed Pretty Heart. Other standout tracks include
another seamless Carlos Serrano mashup, Feist's meaty
Mastodon cover and the ridiculously catchy Neptune by Lemonade. Lastly we
have Wild by Beach House. It's taken from their upcoming album
entitled Bloom, and it's achingly majestic, obviously.

Download here.

01 The Golden Filter - Age Of Consent [New Order Cover]
02 Phoenix vs. Kavinsky - Night Mania [Carlos Serrano Mix]
03 Big Black Delta - Capsize
04 Feist - Black Tounge [Mastodon Cover]
05 Portugal. The Man - All Your LIght [RZA Remix]
06 Lemonade - Neptune
07 Pretty Heart - Sick Soul
08 Father John Misty - Nancy From Now On
09 Jack White - Hip [Eponymous] Poor Boy
10 Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - With The Witness' Dull Surprise [Acoustic]
11 Lykke Li - I Follow Rivers [The Lost Sessions Version]
12 Moonface - Headed For The Door
13 Beach House - Wild

Bjork-death-grips-remixes
Death Grips tackling Bjork? I honestly did not see this coming. And yet it works so damn well! Listen to the noise rap crew's reworking of Sacrifice below. The track forms part of an eight volume remix series from Bjork's critically acclaimed 2011 record/multimedia project Biophilia.

3 reasons to love Grimes

Newgrimes
Canadian born singer/producer Claire Boucher goes by the stage name of Grimes, and she is rightfully receiving a lot of praise for her third full-length record, the appropriately titled Vision. These three videos should hap explain what all the fuss is about.

Jay-Z vs. The Glitch Mob - "99 Days" (Carlos Serrano Mix)

Jay-z-glitch-mob-carlos-serrano
Carlos Serrano is on an unbelievable winning streak right now. Having already unleashed not one but two serious contenders for Best Mashup of 2012 (early days I know, but they really are exceptional), his latest creation, the fluent pairing of Jay-Z's 99 Problems and The Glitch Mob's Fortunate Days, should see his stock rise even further with fans and music bloggers. You stay classy, Mr Serrano.

From the Vault: "Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii" [1972]

Pink
In October 1971, Pink Floyd chose the oldest standing Roman amphitheater, in the desolate ruins of Pompeii, as the setting for a dramatic and ultimately landmark concert, to an audience of no one.

Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii saw the godfathers of prog rip through impressive live renditions of Echoes, Us and Them, Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun and more, interspersed with images of bursting volcanoes, scenes of outer space as well as candid footage of the band at work and play (and eating) during the Dark Side of the Moon recording sessions. Apparently the boys really, really loved oysters!

Watch the entire 92 minute 2003 extended Director's Cut of the film below:

[Video] The Rapture - "How Deep Is Your Love?"

Rapture
How Deep Is Your Love was most definitely the stand out moment on The Rapture's acclaimed new LP In The Grace Of Your Love, and now that track has an official video. A decidedly average video. There's nothing wrong with it per se, it's just that I can't help thinking that a song so stellar deserved an equally superb visual companion. Still an epic tune though.

[Video] Dead Alphabet - "Blood On My Fist"

Deadalphabet
Dead Alphabet, a hip-shaking rock 'n roll band from Jozi with an DIY ethos and some rather big riffs, are primed and ready to take on the world.

I first came across Dead Alphabet a couple of years ago when they competed in the annual Loeries Battle of the Bands competition, and was immediately impressed by the band's tight musicianship and the frontman's seemingly boundless energy on stage. They did not win on that night but have since gone on to tour Europe and have plans to conquer the US later this year, so I guess they did OK for themselves!

Check out the official video for Blood On My Fist, recorded on tour in the UK and then catch one of their upcoming gigs and see what all the fuss is about first hand.
